According to Wikipedia, a handbag is defined as:
A handbag, or purse in American English, is a handled medium-to-large bag that is often fashionably designed, typically used by women, to hold personal items such as wallet/coins, keys, cosmetics, a hairbrush, pepper spray, cigarettes, contraceptives, mobile phone etc.
While I technically agree with the old Wiki, I feel that this description doesn’t in anyway do the handbag justice. It is just so much more. While practically its main purpose is to hold our “personal items” (most of which could, lets be honest, be left at home – you are going to the supermarket, do you REALLY need your pepper spray and contraceptives?) I think the handbag is more well known as the perfect accessory to finish off an outfit, to pull together those jeans and shoes or as the show stopper item for a night out.
There are just SO.MANY.CHOICES when it comes to your bag of choice – style, colour, shoulder strap length, pockets, fastenings… Which is to be celebrated; we are all so good at finding our personal style with the rest of our outfit choices, it stands to reason that our bags should get this same attention as well.
And these days a handbag is as much part of an outfit as, say, a pair of jeans. Ok, maybe a little lower on the scale of importance – you could easily forget your handbag and not look like a crazy person but if you forgot your jeans… But you get the idea. You will very rarely see a lady without a bag slung over her shoulder, a clutch gripped under her arm or a tote swinging on her elbow.
Much as I did with my Shoe Shopping expedition, the focus on this week has been handbags. Glorious hours have been spent searching through the choices available to come up with my top 23 bags of now. From clutches to totes, I left no bag unturned in my search for those that would make up my dream accessory wardrobe.
If you asked me (oh go on then) to pick my one absolute favourite from the line up, I would have to choose the Mulberry Oversized Alexa Bag. I just love everything about this bag and am excited for the day (this is a when not an if) it is actually in my wardrobe.
For a little twist on today’s post, I’ve left two blank spaces in the Handbag Sudoku and I would really like you to send in your favourite bag choices to fill the gaps. Old or new, small or big, I would love to have some of your contributions to my image and to The Worlds Wardrobe.
So send ’em in and I’ll add them to the image… (Either via link, direct image or even just the name of your fave and I’ll go hunt it out)
